Interview Etiquette: 5 Things to Avoid

All too often we find great candidates who are guilty of one the following faux pas at interview. You may think your manners are up to scratch but have a read through the following tips to make sure you are ready for your next interview.

Don’t eat food or chew gum in your interview – seems obvious, but you would be surprised at how often this happens. Also, if you are going to eat directly before your interview make sure to brush your teeth or use mouthwash.

If you are a smoker we advise you use a vape or avoid smoking until after the interview. Sitting and talking closely with an interviewer while smelling of cigarettes could put them off. If you do have to smoke try and disguise the smell.

Yes – I know we said to disguise the smell of smoke. But try not to use too much perfume or aftershave as it can be really off-putting in a confined space. One spray should be enough – scent is better suggested than announced.

Slang and Swearing
Don’t swear during your interview as many people will be put off by swearing. Also, avoid using too much slang, there is a risk it will alienate your interviewer or make you come across as unprofessional.

Avoid a weak and clammy handshake
One of the easiest ways to make a good first impression is a firm, dry handshake. If your hands are sweaty make sure you wipe them first, otherwise you may come across as nervous or dishonest.
